Use these checklists to keep small but important decisions from disappearing between planning, packing, moving, and settling in.
Plan the work
Before a home project
- Write down the finished result and what is outside the project scope.
- Measure the space twice and record the units used.
- Check product instructions, coverage, yield, weight, and storage requirements.
- Estimate materials, waste, delivery, disposal, tools, and cleanup.
- Confirm whether permits, inspections, utility locates, or professional help may be required.
- Plan how people, pets, belongings, and work surfaces will stay safe during the project.
- Set aside a contingency for unknown conditions or a second trip to the store.
Move preparation
Two to four weeks before a move
- Confirm the move date, access instructions, parking, elevator reservations, and contact numbers.
- Compare written quotes, services, fees, estimate status, and valuation or protection terms.
- Sort, donate, sell, recycle, or dispose of items before estimating boxes and vehicle space.
- Schedule utility changes, address updates, prescriptions, school or work notifications, and important deliveries.
- Gather boxes, labels, tape, packing paper, specialty supplies, and a small tool kit.
- Create a folder or digital record for quotes, receipts, inventories, keys, and service confirmations.
- Plan meals, child care, pet care, medication access, and transportation for moving day.
Keep control of the day
Moving day
- Keep identification, keys, medications, chargers, documents, valuables, and essentials with you.
- Photograph the condition of important rooms, appliances, and furniture before loading or unloading.
- Confirm the inventory and note existing damage before the crew starts.
- Keep a written record of added services, delays, access problems, or changed charges.
- Check closets, cabinets, garages, storage areas, and outdoor spaces before leaving.
- At the new home, direct boxes by room and keep walkways, exits, and utility areas clear.
- Confirm the final paperwork and keep receipts before the provider leaves.
Settle in safely
First week in the new home
- Locate the main water shutoff, electrical panel, gas shutoff information, and fire extinguishers.
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and review the household escape plan.
- Look for leaks, unusual odors, damaged outlets, loose railings, or other concerns before unpacking everything.
- Record meter readings, appliance details, filter sizes, warranties, and service dates.
- Update your emergency contacts, address, insurance records, and home inventory.
- Schedule a qualified inspection or repair when a condition is unsafe, unclear, or beyond your experience.
- Add the home to the seasonal maintenance schedule and set the first recurring reminders.
Use the tools with the checklist
Estimate paint, concrete or gravel, electricity, moving costs, quote differences, and packing supplies before writing the number into your plan. A checklist keeps the process visible; the calculators help make the arithmetic consistent.
