Start with written quotes
A quote is most useful when it identifies the services, dates, mileage, access charges, and protection included. For an interstate professional move, compare written estimates and verify whether each estimate is binding or non-binding.
Separate moving from settling in
Transportation may be the largest line item, but deposits, utility setup, cleaning, temporary storage, meals, and replacement household basics can create a second wave of expenses after arrival.
Why include a contingency
A contingency is not a predicted charge. It is room in the plan for uncertain items such as parking, tolls, extra labor time, equipment, delays, or an overlap between homes.
Hiring an interstate mover?
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recommends checking a mover's registration and insurance, getting a written estimate, understanding the documents, and reviewing liability coverage. Its Protect Your Move guidance explains the safeguards and warning signs.
Worked example: a moving plan may combine a written transportation quote with fuel, packing, storage, lodging, setup, and a contingency amount. Keeping those lines separate makes it easier to see whether a quote includes the services you expected.
