Stacked discount and tax

Why stacked discounts do not simply add

Each discount applies to the price left after the previous discount. A 25% discount followed by 10% off is not 35% off. On $100, the first discount leaves $75 and the second removes $7.50, for a final price of $67.50 before tax.

That example produces an effective discount of 32.5%. Sales tax is normally applied after discounts, but rules and taxable amounts can vary by location and item.

How to use this estimate

Enter the posted price and first discount. Open the optional section when a retailer gives a second discount or when you want to estimate tax at checkout. The calculator applies discounts in the order entered, then applies tax to the discounted price.

Assumptions and limits: this treats each discount as a percentage reduction and does not know store exclusions, minimum purchases, coupons that cannot be combined, item-level rounding, or local taxability rules. Confirm the final total at checkout.

This calculator provides arithmetic estimates, not tax advice. Check the displayed checkout total and local rules before purchasing.
