Why percentages work this way
A percent means "per hundred." Dividing the tip percentage by 100 changes it into a decimal that can be multiplied by the bill.
For a $50 bill, a 20% tip is $50 x 0.20 = $10. The total is $60. Splitting changes what each person pays, but it does not change the total tip.
Customs and service-charge rules vary. Check the bill before adding a tip because some restaurants include gratuity automatically.

A tip percentage is usually applied to the bill amount, but local customs and the bill’s instructions may differ. Check whether a service charge or automatic gratuity is already included.
Rounding changes the split
Rounding the total after calculating the tip can make the per-person shares add up differently than splitting the unrounded total. Decide whether one person will settle the small difference.
A tip is not a tax
This calculator adds a voluntary tip to the entered bill. It does not determine sales tax, service fees, delivery fees, or how a business distributes gratuity.
